See The Recipe- (warning, jumping to recipe can result in missing important information including alternative ingredients and tips.)This recipe for Hasselback Style Sweet Potatoes is really special.
I like that it shows a different way to enjoy these potatoes.
Hasselback Style Sweet Potatoes
Hasselback refers to the cuts that are made in something such as these potatoes.
The cuts are made in a uniform style- each in the same direction and equal distances apart (or as close to as possible).
There is a good reason to use the Hasselback technique on anything.
The cuts give us openings. In those openings we can stuff other goodies such as butter or cheese.
The Hasselback method can really make about anything go from dull to exciting visually and in taste.
I have never been a huge fan of the sweet potato.
However, when you can stuff about anything into those Hassleback cuts, the taste can transform a hater like myself into a fan. What should you put into those cuts? Anything from marshmallows to butter. I am going to present a basic way of making these potatoes and you can choose what to put into your cuts.

The recipe for Hasselback Style Sweet Potatoes
What you will need to make this Hasselback Style Sweet Potatoes
- Sweet Potatoes- 4 scrubbed or skinned. I like to scrub my potatoes for recipes such as this one.
- Butter- 8 tablespoons melted. Can top with additional butter after baking. Also, can use olive oil instead (about 1-2 tablespoons per potato).
- Garlic- 2 cloves minced.
- Seasonings- as desired.
- Optional- whatever you plan on putting inside of your cuts. However, you do not have to put anything in them. Ideas would include sugar alternative, marshmallows, or even my low carb spinach and artichoke dip.
How to make Hasselback Style Sweet Potatoes
- Preheat your oven to 400. Prep a baking pan with aluminum foil or similar method.
- Start by slicing your potatoes into horizontal cuts. Do not cut all of the way through the potato. Make these cuts ⅛- ⅙ apart.
- Distribute the melted butter or oil over the potatoes and into the cuts. Using a brush can help do this efficiently.
- Season as desired. If placing something into the cuts you can do this now or halfway through baking depending on the burn/melt temperature of what you are using. Some folks simply place herbs such as thyme between the slices before placing the potatoes into the oven.
- Roast the potatoes for 55-60 minutes or until they seem soft in the center. Remove from the oven and add any additional butter, seasonings, sauces, or even syrup before serving.
- Tip: If the tops of of the potatoes seem to be browning too fast, lightly cover them with additional foil mid way though baking.
