Ingredients

Instructions

  • Prep. Preheat your oven to 375 and prep a rimmed baking sheet or cast iron skillet for nonstick.
  • Dry Ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, use a whisk to combine together the flour, sugar alternative, baking soda, and salt. Add the cold diced butter to the flour mixture and use your hands (or a pastry cutter) to work the ingredients until it resembles coarse crumbs. Then make a well in the center of the ingredients.
  • Wet Ingredient. Add the buttermilk and whisked egg to the well that you just created and use a wooden spoon to mix the ingredients until the dough is just soft (not overmixed).
  • Shape the dough. Transfer the dough to a lightly dusted clean workspace and and gently knead it for about a minute so that the dough comes together. Then shape the dough into a round loaf and place it onto the prepared baking sheet or skillet from the first step.
  • Bake. Use a knife to make an "X" about a half inch deep on the top of your bread. Then bake the bread for 45-50 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Cool. Transfer your soda bread to a wire cooling rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
