Low Carb Turkey Swedish Meatballs is a great alternative to the usual beef version.
Thanks to the gravy that we use in this recipe, it can be hard to tell the difference.
Low Carb Turkey Swedish Meatballs
A low carb version of a favorite meatball recipe.
Also, this version features turkey instead of beef or pork.
Swedish meatballs are known especially for the sauce or gravy that they are served with.
That gravy is usually laden with heavy cream, bread, and flour.
As you may know, if you are someone watching carbohydrates, flour and bread contain carbs.
We are going to use a workaround for the carbohydrates in this recipe.
You probably will not even notice the difference between having the extra carbs and not having the extra carbs.
That is all thanks to the great sauce that we will use with our meatballs.
In case you were wondering, and I know that I have, is it considered to be a gravy or a sauce.
We call it a gravy because the ingredients in it are the same basic ingredients that you would find in a gravy, namely meat related juices. Technically, a gravy is a sauce so I would suppose that you could use either name if you wanted to for your Swedish Meatballs.
There is a way to make this recipe even easier to make.
You could use already prepared turkey meatballs, which you can find online. If you choose to go this route, simply make sure that the turkey meatballs that you use have a minimal if any seasoning especially, Italian seasoning. Also, check the carbs to make sure that they are indeed low in carbs as well.
You could also use a vegetarian or vegan meatball for this recipe.
There are vegetarian meatballs that you can find online.
There is also Vegan Gravy that you can use instead of anything meat based.
You will also need a thickener for your gravy.
Flour is usually used in a meat based gravy such as the one in this recipe. However, flour has carbohydrates in it.
We are using three tablespoons of flour which nets out at about 18 carbohydrates or three carbs per serving.
As a result of the carbs, you could use an alternative thickener instead.
You can find a thickener for gravy that is low in carbs online. I would suggest that you find one that measures 1:1 with flour in volume, or close to it if possible.
There are a few more ingredients that you will need for this recipe that you may not have on hand.
This recipe calls for beef broth.
You can find vegan alternatives to beef broth online (check the carbs first).
Add a kick to your Low Carb Turkey Swedish Meatballs!
As if these do not have their own great taste as is. However, add a bit of red wine, such as a dry Cabernet, to your gravy to take it up a notch.
