This recipe for Air Fried Low Carb Hush Puppies is a 'healthier' twist on a favorite recipe.
I say 'healthier' because these Hush Puppies are not fried in oil
Air Fried Low Carb Hush Puppies
These Hush Puppies are not only not fried in oil, they are also low in carbohydrates.
For many of us, it is the frying in oil and the carbs that have kept us away from enjoying our hush puppies.
Hush Puppies are a popular bread side or appetizer.
We see them served in restaurants or when we dine with friends living in the southern part of the country.
For many of us, Hush Puppies are basically fried cornmeal biscuits.
The problem with hush puppies is that they are not the healthiest thing that we can eat.
I am talking about those of us who need to avoid fried foods. Also, those of us who try to avoid eating a lot of carbohydrates.
Hush Puppies are made with cornmeal and flour.
They are seasoned to taste and then fried in oil. This is a pretty standard recipe for making Hush Puppies.
However, we are going to make a few adjustments in this recipe.
We are not going to use cornmeal as one cup of cornmeal has about 125 grams of carbs in it. Also, we will bake these in an air fryer rather than frying in oil.
I should warn you that these Hush Puppies will not taste exactly like the ones that you may be use to eating.
This is to be expected as we are taking out the cornmeal and not frying them in oil. However, this is a good substitute for anyone who is wanting to eat a hush puppy that is lower in carbs and not fried.
You will need a few ingredients that you may not already have on hand.
You are welcome to use cornmeal in your hush puppies as I have decreased the amount needed in this recipe from the original recipes.
However, there are a couple of alternatives that you can try as well.
First off, instead of cornmeal, you can use Almond Flour or Flaxseed Meal.
While almond flour will behave like a flour and add some flavor, the flaxseed meal will give this a texture that is more like cornmeal.

- Baking Soda- ½ teaspoon.
- Salt and seasonings to taste.
- Onion- 1 small chopped.

- Buttermilk or similar dairy- ½ cup. . We want this thicker than a normal hush puppy batter as we will thus be forming the batter for baking rather than dropping it into hot oil. - Next, stir in the eggs and then add in the buttermilk.
