This Sugar Free German Chocolate Frosting recipe is the perfect match for most any cake.
I like that it tastes so much like the actual German Chocolate Cake frosting but, without all of the added sugar in it.
Sugar Free German Chocolate Frosting
This is the first of a two part recipe for German Chocolate Cake.
The cake portion of this recipe will follow this recipe for the frosting.
A while back I had a request from a reader for a Sugar Free German Chocolate cake recipe.
It took me a bit of thought on how to make this recipe as there are a few of the ingredients in the actual recipe with sugar in it that are hard to substitute in for. However, I think that i have made a suitable recipe that will come pretty close to the actual German Chocolate Cake recipe itself. YAY!
From what I have been told, German Chocolate Cake is actually an American cake.
It got its name from the use of German Chocolate in it. The frosting in this version of the cake is a rich in flavor and very sweet frosting.
This version of the frosting is not as sweet in taste as the original frosting.
However, this one is still a good match for the original. The good news is that this frosting recipe is not laden with sugar.
Like the original recipe, this recipe calls for coconut flakes.
Coconut flakes do have natural sugar in them, although it is not a lot of sugar.
Look for Shredded Coconut Flakes, Organic Unsweetened, Desiccated, Gluten Free, and Sugar Free
100% USDA Organic, Kosher, Non-GMO, Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Soy-Free. Great for Paleo and Vegan diets.
100% pure and all-natural coconut - no added sugars, no whiteners and no preservatives. An ideal plant-based and gluten-free ingredient for baking - add to macaroons or paleo desserts, and top on smoothies, granolas or yogurt.
This is a smaller shred of coconut meat than Fiesta Tropicalรฉ Organic Coconut Chips (Large Coconut Flakes).
Also needed for this recipe is evaporated milk.
Evaporated Milk does have some natural sugar in it. Each serving has about three grams of sugar.
However, if you want to substitute an alternative for the evaporated milk, here are a couple of ideas for you to try.
Coconut Milk is one kind of milk that you can try (1:1 in a recipe) in place of the evaporated milk. Using half and half instead of the evaporated milk is another idea that you can try. I have not tried either however, I suspect that both may be worth a try for you.
This recipe also calls for chopped pecans.
While you could omit the pecans or substitute in another nut, you should know that pecans are pretty much the standard for this icing. So, as a result, I would stick to using the pecans however, you could use fewer of them if you feel as if there are too many of them in this recipe for your liking.
I should also alert you to one more ingredient that is in this recipe.
This recipe calls for egg yolks.
Using egg yolks in this frosting is also a pretty standard thing to do. However, we will be cooking this frosting over the stove (that's right- a frosting that we actually cook!) so please be sure to make sure that you cook this correctly. Also, be sure to refrigerate your cake accordingly.
It is not unusual to also use an icing or ganache on this cake.
The icing or ganache usually goes on top of the cake and under the frosting. You can find my recipe for sugar free ganache here.
