This recipe for Sugar Free Baked Churros is worth a try if you ask me.
I like that there is a way to eat a churro but, without all of the added sugar.
Sugar Free Baked Churros
This recipe is for those of us who dare not enjoy the sugary or fried delicacies in life.
Yet, this is for those of us who want to enjoy the delicacy on our own terms.
For me, an authentic churro is just too much of what I need to avoid.
Namely, what I avoid are both fried and sugary foods. However, the flour I can tolerate if needed and in small amounts (I will offer alternatives to the flour in this recipe).
Churros are a fried dough snack or dessert.
They are a product of Spanish speaking areas such as Mexico and Spain.
This treat is served warm from the fryer and is complemented with plenty of sugar.
While being a fried dough makes the churro what it is, it also has other defining characteristics.
I find it interesting that the churro is another way to serve up a flour, sugar, and a few other mixed in ingredients. However, making the churro even more unique is the shape that we fry, or in this case, bake it as.
Churros get their shape from being piped before frying.
The ridged shape of a churro comes from the star shaped tip that is used on the pastry bag that is used to pipe the dough. If you are intimidated by the whole piping and pastry bag idea, I will let you know that it could take a while to master, is easy to fix (simply replace the messed up piping into the bag and redo it), and does not really affect the taste of your churro in the end.
There is indeed a cheat for those of use who are not so sure about the whole piping process too.
There are piping 'guns' that can make the piping process really easy. Even a common cookie press can do the job (love my cookie press!). What is important as far as looks go, is that you are getting an elongated shape with a ridge or ridges.
I mentioned above that this recipe calls for all purpose flour.
Certainly, I get that not all of my readers want to use all purpose flour for dietary or other reasons. Using a flour alternative is something that is worth trying for that flour.
Here are some flour alternatives that may suit your needs in this recipe.
To make your churros low carb, use a low carb all purpose flour.
Also, to make this keto use a keto all purpose flour.
Lastly, to make this recipe gluten free, use an all purpose gluten free flour.
Also, if you are using Almond flour, you may need to add an additional egg to the batter to aid in the binding process. I suggest anyone using any of the all purpose flour alternatives check the packaging to see if an additional egg or other binder for gluten free baking is needed as well.
You will also need a granulated brown sugar alternative for this recipe.
Please use a granular brown sugar alternative that measures like regular brown sugar. You can find granular brown sugar alternatives here.

How to make Sugar Free Baked Churros
- Start by preheating your oven to 400 and prepping 2-3 baking sheets with parchment paper. Set this aside while you work.
- Gently whip together the eggs and the vanilla extract in a small bowl. Then you can set this bowl aside.
- Next in another small bowl, stir together the sugar alternative and the ground cinnamon. You can set this bowl aside as well.
- For the next step we will heat up the mentioned ingredients in a medium saucepan on medium heat. Since we are using a brown sugar alternative, your results will not be exactly like they would be if you were using brown sugar. However, the results should be suitable for this recipe. Add the brown sugar alternative, water, and butter and stir continuously as you bring the mix to a boil.
- Once the contents in the saucepan begin to boil, you can remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the flour. Tip:use a wooden spoon as this will become rather clumpy and you will need to break up the mixture. When you are able to form a ball transfer this to a mixing bowl.
- Transfer the mixture to your piping bag and pipe out your churros for baking. Two to four inch long churros are good for length.
- Bake for 14-18 minutes or until they begin to brown and puff up. Remove the churros from the oven and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar. Alternatively, you can place the cinnamon sugar in a shallow bowl or plate and roll the churros in it.
Beat the churro batter to break it up and allow it to cool. Then you can beat in the eggs and vanilla.
