This Sugar Free Sesame Chicken recipe tastes a lot like the regular sesame chicken that you may find elsewhere.
However, this recipe does not call for all of the added sugar in it.

Sugar Free Sesame Chicken

This is what I refer to as the 'healthy' version of a traditional recipe.
This is because I have modified the usual recipe in order to make it more friendly to a variety of diets, including sugar free diets.

I must say that this is also a great recipe to modify to fit into a keto or low carb diet too.
As you may know, the usual or original sesame chicken calls for breaded and fried chicken, sometimes the dark meat is used. There are also a few other ingredients, such as sugar, that are used in those recipes too.

I would rather make this recipe as a low carb or keto chicken recipe.

That will mean no breading and no frying of ingredients in this recipe. Also, this means that there are no ingredients needed that go with breading and frying (frying oil, etc.). And, I should say that a wok is not needed for this recipe as well.

Most importantly, this is a sugar free chicken recipe.
We know that being sugar free means that there is no added sugar in this recipe.
This sesame chicken recipe takes out those 'questionable to many diets' ingredients as a result.

I am always for a keto or low carb Chinese or Asian style recipe.

Just because we are taking out some of the less than healthy ingredients in this recipe does not mean that we will sacrifice of taste. At least in my opinion, the taste of this chicken is still a good one, but without some of the ingredients that I would rather avoid.

We can make this recipe for chicken by using the ingredients that we taste most in this kind of chicken.
Since this is sesame chicken, we will still use sesame oil for example.
Also, toasted sesame seeds are a must in a sesame chicken recipe.

This recipe calls for Chili Paste.

Sambal Oelek is one popular version that you can use in this recipe. However, regular Sriracha can be used instead.

Cornstarch is needed as a thickener in this recipe.
Feel free to use an alternative thickener such as Psyllium Husk (use less quantity than cornstarch however) or Xanthan Gum (same amount as cornstarch). Guar Gum is another popular thickener for low carb and keto diets (use less than amount that you would used for cornstarch).

I suggest using chicken breast for this recipe.

Cut the chicken breast up into 1-1 ½" chunks. However, you can used pre-cut chicken to save yourself some time as well. Also, serve this sesame chicken with broccoli florets to make it even more authentic. You can find low carb rice options here as well.

  • Chicken Breast- 10-12 ounces cut up. An average chicken breast is about four ounces so use four chicken breasts for example. Cut the chicken into 1 - 1 ½" chunks or simply purchase it already cut up for you. Cook this as directed or purchase the chicken already cooked.
  • Soy Sauce- 2 tablespoons. ( Look for sauce that is net one carb per tablespoon)
  • Sugar Free Ketchup- 1 ½ tablespoons. You can find sugar free ketchup here or use this recipe for sugar free homemade ketchup.
  • Chili Paste- ½ tablespoon.
Sambal Oelek is one popular version that you can use in this recipe. However, regular Sriracha can be used instead.
  • Brown Sugar Alternative- 1 ½ tablespoons equivalent to brown sugar granular alternative.
  • Sesame Oil- 1 tablespoon.
  • Grated Ginger- 1 teaspoon.
  • Grated or Minced Garlic-1 clove (1 to 1 ½ tsp).
  • Broth, such as chicken or vegetable broth- ⅓ cup
  • Xanthan Gum- 1- 2 teaspoons. Can use Cornstarch or Psyllium Husk or Guar Gum(use less quantity however) .
  • Toasted Sesame Seeds-2 tablespoons.

How to make Sugar Free Sesame Chicken

To make this, either cook the chicken in a skillet or wok and set it aside where it can stay warm while we prepare the sauce to go over the chicken. Have the chicken in a large bowl or baking dish as we will be stirring the sauce into it later on.

  • We will next make the sauce. In a saucepan over medium heat, stir together the soy sauce, sugar free ketchup, chili paste, brown sugar alternative, sesame oil, ginger and garlic. Allow this to cook for a few minutes in order to blend together. Then add the broth and stir in 1 teaspoon of the thickener (Xantham Gum or cornstarch or other). Bring this to a boil, stirring occasionally or as needed. One it begins to boil you can turn the heat down and allow this to simmer for two minutes, stirring as needed. If this seems too thin, add in the remaining thickener.
  • Remove the sauce from the stove and transfer it to the chicken, stirring the sauces into the chicken to cover the all of the pieces or chunks of chicken evenly. Note: if you are serving this with broccoli, you can also add the broccoli before or while you stir in the sauce.
  • Lastly, sprinkle the sesame seeds over the chicken and serve.

serve this sesame chicken with broccoli florets to make it even more authentic. You can find low carb rice options here as well.
