Tips for making the best Hawaiian French Toast.
Using sweetened Hawaiian Rolls is the standard for this recipe thanks to their flavor. To keep this recipe sugar free, you can simple opt to use a similar sized roll that is made without added sugar (you can add a small amount of sugar alternative to the eggs for sweetening).
More helpful tips for you.
- Just like with classic French toast, using day old bread works best for absorbing the custard while keeping texture. You can simple leave your rolls out overnight before making this recipe if needed.
- Using whole milk gives this recipe a rich texture. You can however substitute with 2% or even a dairy-free alternative like almond or oat milk.
- Cinnamon and Vanilla are used for additional flavor. Feel free to adjust these as desired or use other spices such as nutmeg or a homemade spice blend.
- Some people like to soak their bread in the custard mixture before making French toast. This works great for sliced bread however, with these rolls, a quick dip in the custard works best. Over-soaking your rolls can lead to soggy French toast.
- It is best to cook your French toast over medium-low to medium heat. This will allow the inside of the toast to cook thoroughly without burning the outside.
- Lastly, depending on the size of your pan, you should cook your French toast in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan if needed.
