Ingredients needed to make granola bars without added sugar.

    • Butter. If you are using unsalted butter you can add a half teaspoon of salt to the dry ingredients.
    • Brown Sugar Alternative. For best results, use a brown sugar alternative that measures like sugar and that can also be baked with.
    • Vanilla Extract. Used for a bit of flavor balance.
    • Maple Syrup. This is used for both flavor and to help hold the ingredients together.
    • Oats. Use old fashioned oats and not quick or another kind of oat.
    • Rice Cereal. This adds a bit of crunch to the texture. You can find rice cereal without added sugar here.
    • Chocolate Chips. Sugar free chocolate chips can be found here.

Tips for making the best granola bars without sugar.

Old fashioned oats are used in this recipe for a chewy texture. Quick oats can be used however, the texture will not be the same.

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. Rice cereal gives these bars a bit of a crunch, which is a nice texture balance for the oats. You can try using a similar crunchy cereal if needed.
    2. Maple syrup is used as a binder to help hold the ingredients together. Many sugar free maple syrup alternatives are not suitable for using as a binder so it is best to read the label first (some sugar free maple syrup alternatives are meant to be used as a topping for pancakes etc).
    3. Agave syrup is one no added sugar alternative that could work in this recipe however, you may need to adjust the amount used as maple syrup tends to measure differently from others.
    4. Stirring in a teaspoon or two of unsweetened cocoa powder can give you a chocolate oat bar.
    5. Adding a half cup of chopped nuts will add a nice crunchy element to your bars.
    6. Dried fruit (such as raisins) can also add a nice element to these granola bars.

How to make No Added Sugar Chocolate Chip Granola Bars

    Prep Time: 10 minutes .
    Chill Time: 1 hour .
    Servings: 24 bars .

    1. Prepare. Line a 9x13" baking pan or dish with parchment paper that overhangs the sides of the pan.
    2. Dry Ingredients. In a large bowl, combine together the old fashioned oats and rice cereal.
    3. Stovetop. Using a large pot on medium-high heat, melt together the butter, brown sugar alternative, vanilla extract, and maple syrup. Heat the ingredients, stirring or whisking as needed, until the butter has fully melted. Then stir or whisk the ingredients continually for one more minute before removing them from the heat.
    4. Combine. Next, carefully use a rubber spatula or similar item to fold in the dry ingredients from the bowl with the warm ingredients from the stove. You can do this in the large mixing bowl if your pot is not large enough.
    5. Chocolate Chips. Lastly, fold in your chocolate chips until they are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
    6. Set. Transfer your mixture to your prepared baking pan and use the backside of your rubber spatula or a spoon to press the mixture in place. Then place your granola bars in your freezer until set (about an hour).

Expert Tip 👉 To make thinner but, more bars you can use a larger baking pan. For thicker bars, use a smaller pan.
