What makes scones so so good?

Scones are really a classic baked goodie that are as delicious for breakfast as they are for afternoon tea or an after dinner dessert.

I like that scones are easy to make and easy to personalize.

Made with mashed bananas, Greek yogurt, and browned butter, that easy quick bread is moist and flavorful with a burst of chocolate in every bite. Both this recipe for scones and that recipe for bread are easy to make chocolate chip bakery goods without adding sugar.

Here is what else you will like about this recipe.

    • This is a simple version of a quick bread which means that these scones do not need rising time.
    • While these scones are perfect for breakfast, they can really be served about any time of the day including snack or dessert time.

Ingredients you will need to make sugar free scones.

    • Flour. Regular all purpose flour was used to make my scones.
    • Brown Sugar Alternative. Select a brown sugar alternative that measures like regular brown sugar and can also be baked with.
    • Baking Powder and Baking Soda. Both are used to make these scones airy.
    • Butter. Use cold butter that is cut into cubes. If you are unsalted butter you can add a quarter teaspoon of salt to the flour.
    • Buttermilk. Buttermilk really works best in this recipe for flavor, moisture, and acidity needed to assist the leaveners. Plain yogurt could be used as an alternative.
    • Vanilla Extract. Added for a bit of flavor balance.
    • Sugar Free Chocolate Chips. Semi-sweet have a nice texture for this recipe.
    • Topping. Whole Milk (or half and half or heavy whipping cream) and Granular Sugar Alternative.
    • Glaze. Sugar Free Powdered Sugar, Vanilla Extract, and Heavy Cream.

Expert Tip ๐Ÿ‘‰ This recipe can also be made with raisins, blueberries, diced strawberries or even chopped nuts instead of chocolate chip.

How to make Sugar Free Chocolate Chip Scones

    Prep Time: 20 minutes .
    Bake Time: 20 minutes .
    Servings: 8 scones .

    1. Prepare. Preheat your oven to 375 and prep a rimmed baking sheet for nonstick. Parchment paper or a baking mat can work.
    2. Dry Ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, use a whisk to combine together your flour, sugar alternative, baking powder, baking soda, and salt (if using unsalted butter).
    3. Butter. Use a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. If you do not have a pastry cutter a food processor can be used.
    4. Buttermilk. Use a clean whisk to combine together the vanilla extract and the buttermilk. Then slowly stir the mixture into your dough.
    5. Chocolate Chips. Using a rubber spatula or similar item, fold the chocolate chips into your cookie dough until evenly distributed.
    6. Shape. Place a sheet of parchment paper on a flat work area. Transfer the dough to the parchment paper and use your hands to shape the dough into a large disc that is about an inch and a half to two inches tall. Then use a large knife to carefully slice the disc in half and then slice the halves in half. Continue slicing until you have eight equal sized wedges.
    7. Chill. Place your scone wedges on to your baking sheet about an inch apart and then use a pastry brush to brush each of the scones with milk or buttermilk before sprinkling the granular sugar alternative on top. Place the sheet with the scones into your refrigerator, for at least 15 minutes, to set.
    8. Bake. Bake your scones until golden brown, about 20-22 minutes. Then let the scones sit on the baking sheet for five minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to fully cool.
    9. Glaze. Use a whisk to combine together the Sugar Free Powdered Sugar, Vanilla Extract, and Heavy Cream. Then use a small spoon to drizzle the mixture over your fully cooled scones.

Tips for making the best homemade scones.

Cold butter (and other dairy!) is essential for making proper scones as the butter helps keep the structure of the scones while baking. This will help keep your scones both moist and flaky.

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. If your dough seems to stick to your pastry cutter try dusting the cutter with a small amount of flour. Flour can help keep the dough from sticking.
    2. Buttermilk works best in this recipe as the fat content needed for texture. Heavy cream or full fat coconut milk can also work.
    3. This recipe can be made in advance. Simply follow the step as indicated up through refrigerating the scones. Then when you are ready to bake your scones, continue the last two steps as indicated.

    How to store scones.

Once your scones have fully cooled they can be stored in an airtight container. When properly stored, scones can keep for up to a couple of days at room temperature, up to a week when refrigerated, or up to a few of months when frozen.
