There are so many reasons to make a delicious red cookie such as this one.
If you are like me then you probably really enjoy a red cookie such as this one during the holiday season and of course, Valentine's day!
The truth is that red velvet any thing (yummy that is) is known for more than just being red.
If you have seen my recipe for Sugar Free Red Velvet Cupcakes, then you know where I am going with this. It really is about the It is the unsweetened cocoa powder as much as it is about the red food coloring that is added to the batter.
Some folks like to frost or places a yummy middle in these cookies.

You may be wondering what red velvet is made of.
Well, I just mentioned that these cookies have unsweetened cocoa powder in them. It is the unsweetened cocoa powder that helps to give the flavor and deepen the color of these cookies.
Anything that tastes good and is called red velvet also has red food coloring in it.
Many red velvet cookies have white chocolate chips in them. When I first posted this recipe sugar free chocolate chips did not exist on the market. However, today you can find sugar free white chocolate chips online here! YAY!! 🙂
There are some substitutes for the red food dye that is used in this recipe.
I should mention that I have not tried using any of these alternatives in this recipe. However, I get that not everyone has red food dye on hand or is wanting to use red food dye for various reasons.
So, here are a few alternatives to red dye that you can try.
Please use them in the same amounts that you would use the red dye as you do not want to through off the other ingredients in this cookie recipe. You could try using red beet juice or pomegranate juice to achieve the red color this recipe.

- This recipe calls for All Purpose Flour.
Make this recipe gluten free by using gluten free flour instead of regular flour. Or, you can make this recipe low carb by using low carb Carbalose flour. Make this 'keto friendly' by using a keto friendly flour. Please check the packaging to assure whether or not you will need a binder such as an additional egg. - While I am not specifically calling for sugar free white chocolate chips in this recipe, you can add a cup of them to your cookies. Simply fold the white chocolate chips into your cookie batter after you have mixed the other ingredients together.
- I mentioned earlier that many people like to frost their cookies or fill them with a cream cheese frosting. I alternatively like to dust these cookies with a sugar free powdered sugar. You can make your own sugar free powdered sugar using this recipe or you can buy sugar free powdered sugar already made online.
Here is a caution for baking these red velvet cookies.
Like with most anything that is made in the kitchen and is also red, there is always a chance of staining. I know this from experience :). I suggest wearing an apron or clothes that you do not mind getting red food coloring on just in case there is a spill or a splatter.

What you will need to make this recipe for Sugar Free Red Velvet Cookies
- All Purpose Flour- 1 ¼ cup.
Make this recipe gluten free by using gluten free flour instead of regular flour. Or, you can make this recipe low carb by using low carb Carbalose flour. Make this 'keto friendly' by using a keto friendly flour. Please check the packaging to assure whether or not you will need a binder such as an additional egg. - Baking Powder- 1 teaspoon. This is more of a 'cakelike' cookie, decrease the baking powder to ½ teaspoon if you would like this cookie to be less 'cakelike'.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder- ¼ cup.
- Butter- 1 stick plus one tablespoon, room temperature. That is nine tablespoons total.
- Sugar Alternative- ⅓ cup. Please us a granulated Sugar Alternative that measures 1:1 with sugar for best results.
- Brown Sugar Alternative- ⅓ cup. Please use a granular brown sugar alternative that measures like regular brown sugar. You can find granular brown sugar alternatives here.
- Egg-1. Have your egg at room temperature for best results.
- Vanilla Extract- 1 teaspoon.
- Red Food Coloring- ½-1 tablepsoon (depending on how red you would like these to be).
- Optional- sugar free white chocolate chips, 1 cup, folded in.
- Optional- sugar free cream cheese frosting or sugar free powdered sugar. You can make your own sugar free powdered sugar using this recipe or you can buy sugar free powdered sugar already made online.
How to make Sugar Free Red Velvet Cookies
- Preheat your oven to 325 and prep your cookie sheets with Parchment Paper .
- In a medium mixing bowl use a fork or a whisk to mix together the flour and the baking powder. Then mix in the unsweetened cocoa powder using the fork or whisk.
- Next, in a large mixing bowl, beat together the sugar alternatives with the butter until creamy.
- For the next step, we will add the dry ingredients from the first bowl to the mixing bowl. Do this by adding half of the dry ingredients at a time, stirring gently between additions. The add the egg, vanilla extract, and the red food coloring . Mix until just combined. If you are adding the sugar free white chocolate chips, simply fold them in at this point.
- When scooping the cookie dough onto the prepped sheets for baking, please leave ample room between the cookies. Bake the cookies for 18-20 minutes or until they appear to be set. You may not be able to notice any golden edges are these cookies are red. Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack before serving or frosting.
