There are so many reasons to make a delicious red cookie such as this one.
If you are like me then you probably really enjoy a red cookie such as this one during the holiday season and of course, Valentine's day!

The truth is that red velvet any thing (yummy that is) is known for more than just being red.

If you have seen my recipe for Sugar Free Red Velvet Cupcakes, then you know where I am going with this. It really is about the It is the unsweetened cocoa powder as much as it is about the red food coloring that is added to the batter.

Some folks like to frost or places a yummy middle in these cookies.
I have some great tasting sugar free frosting recipes that would work great with this recipe!
Check out my Stevia Cream Cheese Frosting , Sugar Free Greek Yogurt Frosting, and my Sugar Free Buttercream Frosting recipes as they would work great with these cookies!

You may be wondering what red velvet is made of.

Well, I just mentioned that these cookies have unsweetened cocoa powder in them. It is the unsweetened cocoa powder that helps to give the flavor and deepen the color of these cookies.

Anything that tastes good and is called red velvet also has red food coloring in it.

Many red velvet cookies have white chocolate chips in them. When I first posted this recipe sugar free chocolate chips did not exist on the market. However, today you can find sugar free white chocolate chips online here! YAY!! 🙂

There are some substitutes for the red food dye that is used in this recipe.

I should mention that I have not tried using any of these alternatives in this recipe. However, I get that not everyone has red food dye on hand or is wanting to use red food dye for various reasons.

So, here are a few alternatives to red dye that you can try.

Please use them in the same amounts that you would use the red dye as you do not want to through off the other ingredients in this cookie recipe. You could try using red beet juice or pomegranate juice to achieve the red color this recipe.

Here are some tips Sugar Free Red Velvet Cookies

I just mentioned that you could try using an alternative for the red food coloring in the same amount if possible. These alternatives include red beet juice or pomegranate juice .

Here are some more helpful tips for making red velvet cookies.

  1. This recipe calls for All Purpose Flour.
Make this recipe gluten free by using gluten free flour instead of regular flour. Or, you can make this recipe low carb by using low carb Carbalose flour. Make this 'keto friendly' by using a keto friendly flour. Please check the packaging to assure whether or not you will need a binder such as an additional egg.
  2. While I am not specifically calling for sugar free white chocolate chips in this recipe, you can add a cup of them to your cookies. Simply fold the white chocolate chips into your cookie batter after you have mixed the other ingredients together.
  3. I mentioned earlier that many people like to frost their cookies or fill them with a cream cheese frosting. I alternatively like to dust these cookies with a sugar free powdered sugar. You can make your own sugar free powdered sugar using this recipe or you can buy sugar free powdered sugar already made online.

Here is a caution for baking these red velvet cookies.

Like with most anything that is made in the kitchen and is also red, there is always a chance of staining. I know this from experience :). I suggest wearing an apron or clothes that you do not mind getting red food coloring on just in case there is a spill or a splatter.
