Ingredients needed.
- Sugar Free Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix You will need just the dry mix and not the ingredients listed on the packaging to make it.
- Chocolate Milk. Whole milk adds the most moisture. Unsweetened cocoa mix was added to my milk to make it 'chocolate' (this is optional). Unsweetened Coconut Milk or Unsweetened Cashew Milk can also be used.
- Sugar Free Chocolate Cake Mix - Devil’s Food Cake Mix works well. Look for a 14-16 ounce size box. With some sugar free cake mixes, you may need more than one.
- Butter. Use unsalted butter that has been melted.
- Sugar Free Chocolate Chips. Use 'baking chips' if you want the structure of the chip to hold up better.

More helpful tips for you.
- Make sure your chocolate milk is cold when whisking it with the pudding mix so that it can thicken properly. Your butter should be melted and then cooled to room temperature. Butter that is too warm can "cook" the flour in the cake mix instantly rather than soaking into it.
- This recipe works best when the layers are evenly spread out before adding the next layer on top. With the bottom layer, make sure that the pudding mix is completely blended in with the milk before adding the cake mix on top.
- When adding each of the layers however, take care to not to stir the all of layers together (keep the layers separated)! When the cake is done baking, it is the layers that make this cake even better.
- Allow the cake to sit for 10-15 minutes after taking it out of the oven. This is done to allow the pudding to set up properly. If you serve the cake before it is allowed to set up, your cake can lose its defined layers and become messy when served.
FAQ
- Can I use Cook & Serve pudding?
It is highly recommended to use Instant Pudding. Cook and Serve pudding requires high heat and constant stirring to thicken, which does not happen in the layering process of a dump cake. Using Instant Pudding ensures your cake has that perfect fudgy bottom layer! - Can I make this dump cake dairy-free?
Yes! To make this a dairy free and sugar free dump cake, simply swap the chocolate milk for an unsweetened chocolate almond, soy, or oat milk. You should also ensure that your chocolate chips and cake mix are also dairy-free. - Do I need to mix the layers together?
No! That is the beauty of a dump cake Do not stir the ingredients once they are in the pan. The melted butter and chocolate milk will seep through the dry cake mix during the baking process, creating a moist, cobbler-like texture. - Why is my dump cake still powdery on top?
If you see dry spots from the cake mix after baking, it usually means the melted butter did not reach those areas. To prevent this, make sure that you pour the butter as evenly as possible over the entire surface of the cake mix. You can also lightly press the cake mix into the pudding layer with the back of a spoon before adding the butter if needed. - Can I use a different flavor of pudding?
As long as it is 'instant pudding'.
Variations.
- Chocolate Peanut Butter Explosion
Use Sugar Free Peanut Butter Chips instead of (or mixed with) the chocolate chips. You can also add dollops of sugar free peanut butter on top of the cake mix for even more peanut butter. - Chocolate Mint aka "Thin Mint" Style Add a half teaspoon of peppermint extract to the chocolate milk before whisking it into the pudding. You can also sprinkle crushed sugar free peppermint candies on top. This is a nice idea especially during the holiday season!
- Mocha Dissolve two tablespoons of instant espresso powder into your chocolate milk to create a "darker" and more intense chocolate taste.
