This recipe for Air Fried Corn Nuts really surprised me.
This is because I had always thought of corn nuts as a greasy and salty kind of junk food. This recipe totally dispels that idea! 🙂
Air frying is my favorite method of baking just about anything . I like that it is so easy to use an air fryer, baking is quick, and an air fryer requires no added grease or fat to make something yummy!
Even better, there are some great accessories that can help you bake about anything in your air fryer (see them here!).
Air Fried Corn Nuts
This is the healthy way to make something crunchy out of a vegetable such as corn.
It is also a good way to snack on something crunchy that is also natural.
This recipe is a bit different from other popular air fried recipes that I have posted.
While these recipes all feature air frying a vegetable, this one does not include any kind of breading or topping. You can see my low carb air fried mushrooms or cauliflower tots to see what I mean.
It may actually surprise you to learn that corn nuts are not necessarily made by using the usual yellow corn kernels that you may already be used to eating.
Corn nuts are made from using large white corn kernels. Even just as popular is to actually use hominy.
You may ask what is the difference between hominy and corn.
Actually, hominy is a kind of corn that has been soaked or modified to be a larger and meatier kind of corn kernel. The result of the modification, or processing, makes hominy seem perfect for a crunch snack such as this one, right?
So you may be wondering if you can actually substitute hominy for corn.
I just touched upon hominy being corn kernels that have been processed. That processing is a soaking that rids the hominy of their hulls.
Certainly, because hominy is corn, it tastes and looks like corn.
However, the hulls have been removed from the corn. This makes the hominy easier for us to make a great tasting snack with and I should add, without having to deal with the hulls (getting into the spaces between my teeth....).
Here are some tips Air Fried Corn Nuts
I mentioned above that you can use large white corn kernels to make your corn nuts. But, also usable in this recipe is to actually use hominy instead.
Check out these tips to help you make air fried corn nuts.
- Air fry your corn nuts in a single layer in your basket. It is possible that you will have to make more than one batch to do so but, a single layer will assure even baking of your corn nuts.
- Allowing your corn nuts to sit out on a paper towel after baking will allow the corn nuts to drain off any excess oil.
- Store your corn nuts in an airtight container as they should stay good for a while.
- Jazz up the taste of your corn nuts by using different seasonings. You can also add a teaspoon of hot sauce or Worcester sauce to the mix.
There is a bit of preparation that you will need to do in advance with this recipe.
You will need to soak your kernels overnight in water to rehydrate. To do so simply place the kernels in a large bowl and cover the bowl with water. Let the kernels soak overnight. Then in the morning, simply drain the corn and spread them evenly over a few stacked paper towels or kitchen towel to dry, padding them down as needed with another towel, (a half-hour should work).
