I like that this recipe for Sugar Free Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins is both healthy and yummy.
Even better, it is a great tasting recipe too!
Sugar Free Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
This recipe is very similar to my Sugar Free Banana Muffins.
I must say that that has been a very popular recipe around here as well.
For this recipe I am going to take on a bit of a more healthy twist.
For starters, we are going to be using banana in it.
Also, I am going to throw in an option for using old fashioned oatmeal as a grain in the recipe.
You probably already know that bananas can replace butter in baking.
I like to add bananas because they make everything that I bake with them even more moist.
Also, bananas add their own special taste to whatever they are added to.
There are plenty of baked foods that you can use bananas for.
Obviously, bananas are great when they are added to muffins, such as in the case of this recipe.
However, I am a fan of adding bananas to smoothies, pancakes, and to oatmeal (an option in this recipe).
You may be wondering how this can be a sugar free recipe if we are adding bananas to it.
It is true that the average banana does have about 14 grams of sugar in it. However, that is a natural sugar that comes from the fruit itself.
We will not be adding any other sugar to this recipe.
Instead, we will be using sugar alternatives to sweeten up this recipe. Even the chocolate chips are Sugar Free Chocolate Chips.
Here are some tips to help you make your perfect sugar free banana chocolate chip muffins.
I cannot think of a better use for bananas that may seem to be beyond their freshness date. These soft bananas are perfect for adding to a recipe such as this one.
Here are some more great tips to help you with this muffin recipe.
- If you are out of bananas, try using applesauce instead. You will need about ¾ of a cup of apple sauce for this recipe.
- To replace the sugar alternative in this recipe, try mashing an extra banana with a bit of water in this recipe (I have not tried doing this).
- Resist the urge to over-mix the batter when you have combined your ingredients. Over-mixing causes the muffin to lose air pockets and become hard. I like to blend in my dry ingredients just until they become mixed.
I mentioned that you will need Sugar Free Chocolate Chips-for this recipe.
While I usually use sugar free chocolate chips that have been sweetened but, without sugar, there are other alternatives. You could simply opt for chocolate chips that have not been sweetened or have been sweetened naturally like some of these choices.

The recipe for Sugar Free Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
As mentioned, you will need Sugar Free Chocolate Chips-for this recipe. You could simply opt for chocolate chips that have not been sweetened or have been sweetened naturally like some of these choices.
There are a few flour options that you can use in this recipe.
To make this lower in carbs, use a low carb all purpose flour. Also, to make this more keto-friendly use a keto all purpose flour. To make this recipe gluten free, use an all purpose gluten free flour.
Also, if you are using Almond flour, please add an additional egg to the batter to aid in the binding process. I suggest anyone using any of the all purpose flour alternatives check the packaging to see if an additional egg or other binder for gluten free baking is needed as well.
What you will need to make this
I am going to throw in an option for using old fashioned oatmeal as a grain in the recipe. Simply substitute ¾ths of the flour in this recipe with the oatmeal.
Here are the ingredients that you will need for this muffin recipe.
- All Purpose Flour- 1 ½ cups. I mentioned above, to make this lower in carbs, use a low carb all purpose flour. Also, to make this more keto-friendly use a keto all purpose flour. To make this recipe gluten free, use an all purpose gluten free flour.
- Baking Soda- 1 teaspoon
- Sugar Alternative- equivalent to ½ cup of sugar. While I am usually a proponent for a granular option that measures 1:1 with sugar, other more natural alternatives (such as agave ⅓ cup or ¼ cup honey, adjust this as needed for consistency).
- Bananas- 3 mashed (around 1 ¼-1/3 cup).
- Butter- ½ cup melted. You can find butter alternatives online. Please read the instructions for using the one that you have selected to use.
- Vanilla Extract- 1 teaspoon.
- Milk- 2 tablespoons. Please use only one tablespoon if you are using agave to sweeten your muffins. You can find vegan milk alternatives online.
- Egg- 1. You can find egg alternatives here.
- Sugar Free Chocolate Chips- ¾ cup.
How to make Sugar Free Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
This is a recipe that works well when hand mixed rather than using an electric mixer. Mixing this by hand will help you avoid over-mixing the batter.
Here is how to make these muffins.
- Preheat your oven to 350 and prep your muffin pans for nonstick.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together your flour and baking soda.
- Next, in a mixing bowl blend together the sugar alternative, bananas, and butter.
- For the next step we will add everything else but the chocolate chips. The flour mixture from the second step will be added half at a time. Do this by stirring in the first half of the flour mixture. Stir gently and then add the vanilla extract, milk, and the egg with the second half of the flour. Mix until just blended and then fold in the chocolate chips.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes or until your muffins begin to brown. You could do the toothpick test however, keep in mind that the melting chocolate chips may give a false result. Allow your muffins to cool before serving.
