I have found that this Sugar Free Homemade Licorice recipe is a lot like the regular licorice that you may find at the store.
Obviously, in my opinion, this recipe better because it does not have all of the added sugar in it.
Sugar Free Homemade Licorice
A recipe for homemade licorice candy that does not have sugar added to it.
This recipe is a tasty snack that also tastes like the real thing.
This recipe does remind me of the Sugar Free Gummy Candy recipe that I posted a while back.
That recipe was for a candy that is popular gummy that folks like to chew on or use as decorations on other food creations. I will say that no matter if it is a sugar free or regular sugared gummy or licorice, they are similar in many ways.
Let me first mention that there is a difference between sugar free and regular licorice.
This recipe is intended to be a work-around for anyone who wants to enjoy licorice but, is following a restricted sugar lifestyle. If you are someone who really wants some licorice but, does not want the sugar that comes with it, this is a good alternative.
The main difference between this recipe for sugar free licorice and regular licorice is obviously the sugar that comes with the regular licorice.
Regular licorice is usually made with corn syrup, molasses, and sugar. These ingredients give the licorice the flavoring and the structure that alternatives cannot provide (why we use a work-around).
This recipe is for anyone asking if they make sugar free licorice.
Also, this recipe is for anyone wanting to make a candy that has no added sugar in it.
I am personally a fan of knowing everything that goes into what I make and eat.
Yes, you can simply eat licorice as it is.
However, this licorice can be used to decorate cakes or cookies.
I also like the idea of making sugar free homemade licorice to give out as gifts (Holiday season, Valentines Day, Mother's Day...).
Here are some tips for making your homemade licorice,
So I just mentioned that this sugar free licorice recipe is a work-around for making licorice. This is because the recipe for 'real licorice' depends upon the sugar that is provided from the ingredients to both add flavor and structure.
Here are some more helpful licorice tips for you.
- The color and flavor of this licorice depends upon the color and flavor of the gelatin that you use. However, you can customize a color and flavor by using a flavorless and colorless gelatin. Then add your chosen flavor extract and food coloring to personalize your licorice.
- How to make this recipe a 'black licorice' recipe. Use the unflavored gelatin to make this. Add black food coloring (a few drops or as desired) and a tablespoon of anise extract.
- Another idea is to make this a 'soda' flavored licorice. Simply use diet soda instead of water to get that flavoring!
Lastly, you will need candy molds to make this candy.
You can use find a good variety of molds that work with this candy online. Making a licorice rope however, may not works as sugar helps shape the ropes and we are not adding sugar.

Also, I mentioned how to make this recipe into a 'black licorice.'
To make this recipe a 'black licorice' recipe. Use the unflavored gelatin to make this. Add black food coloring (a few drops or as desired) and a tablespoon to a tablespoon of anise extract.
Ingredients needed to make homemade licorice
- Unflavored and Unsweetened Gelatin Powder- 1.75 ounces. That is equivalent to 7 (one half ounce) packets. Make this colorful and flavorful by subbing in a box of sugar free gelatin (.32 ounce) with color and flavor for one of those unflavored packets.
- Cold Water- ยฝ cup.
- Sugar Alternative- ยฝ cup equivalent to sugar. Please select an alternative that can be heated for recipe use. Liquid sugar alternative should work in this recipe. (I have not tried it however).
- Vanilla Extract- 2 teaspoons. Feel free to sub in another flavor extract and alter the amount added to suit your needs.
- Food Coloring- as needed and desired.
How to make Sugar Free Homemade Licorice
- I like to prep my candy molds with a bit of nonstick to facilitate removal and clean up.
- In a small saucepan stir or whisk together the gelatin and the water. Then place the saucepan on medium heat and heat until liquefied. You will need to stir the mixture often. It will take a bit of a while to get to that liquefied stage.
- Once the mixture has become liquefied your can stir in the remaining ingredients and then remove the saucepan from the stove.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared molds and allow them to cool slightly. Transfer to the freezer (takes about 15 minutes) or the refrigerator (a bit longer) to become solid enough to enjoy.
