- Blackberries Fresh blackberries are preferred in this recipe for flavor.
- Sugar Alternative. Select a granular sugar alternative that can also be baked with.
- Cornstarch. Added as a thickener for consistency.
- Vanilla Extract. Used as a flavor balance.
- Water. A fruit juice can alternatively be used for flavor.
Crumble Topping
- Oats. Old fashioned or rolled oats work best for consistency of the topping.
- Flour. You can use an alternative all purpose flour, such as gluten free all purpose flour, as long as it measures like regular all purpose flour.
- Brown Sugar Alternative. Select a brown sugar alternative that measures like regular brown sugar and that can also be baked with.
- Butter. The butter should be melted and cooled to room temperature.
- Cinnamon. Use a ground cinnamon that has no added sugar.
- Baking Powder. Added for a bit of leavening in the topping.
Tips for making the best blackberry crumble.
Fresh blackberries are preferred in this recipe as they will have the best flavor. If you decide to use frozen blackberries, you should use them frozen rather than allowing them to thaw out as thawing them can throw off the liquid ingredients in this recipe.

- While my crumble was made with blackberries, you can use another berry instead of or with blackberries in this recipe. I like blueberries or raspberries for example.
- When working with blackberries, keep in mind that they can be more fragile than other berries and can get a bit messy. You may want to wear an apron.
- For a thicker filling, omit the water or add an extra teaspoon or two of the cornstarch.
- To make a thinner more runny filling, you can omit the cornstarch.

- Place the blackberries into a large mixing bowl. In a smaller bowl, use a whisk to combine together the sugar alternative, cornstarch, water, and vanilla extract. Then pour this mixture over the blackberries and toss them until the ingredients are combined and the the berries are covered with the other ingredients.
- Evenly spread the blackberries in your prepared baking dish.
- To make the crumble, combine together your oats, flour, brown sugar alternative, melted butter, cinnamon and baking powder in a mixing bowl or food processor until crumbly. Then sprinkle this (using your hands) over the blackberry mixture in the baking dish.
- Bake your crumble for 30-35 minutes or until the the crumble topping turns golden and you can see some bubbling from the fruit.
- While this dessert tastes amazing while warm, it is a good idea to allow it to cool a bit (10-20 minutes) before serving as the fruit can be hot.

Leftover blackberry crumble should be stored in an airtight container. When properly stored and refrigerated, this crumble should be good for up to three days. Frozen crumble should keep for up to a few months when properly wrapped.
