Sugar Free Blueberry Compote Sauce is a perfect garnish for anything from pancakes to pound cake.
This flavorful sauce is deliciously fruity with a subtle sweetness and hint of lemon.

Blueberry compote with no added sugar.
This compote sauce is both a sweet and tart thanks to the fresh blueberries and the lemon juice that is added to it.
I like that this blueberry compote is like slightly concentrated fresh blueberries but, with a slightly syrupy texture.
Did you try my recipe for Strawberry Compote ?
That strawberry compote recipe is similar to this one as they are both compote recipes made with fresh fruit and no added sugar. However, that compote recipe is thickened with sugar free pectin. Both recipes are delicious and made with no added sugar.
This compote can be stored in glass jars which also are nice for sharing your homemade compote with others. You can find a selection of jars that may work for compote here.
Frequently asked questions about compote.
Compote is basically a sauce that is made with fresh fruit that has been heated on the stove to break it down into a sauce. You can think of compote as being kind of like a preserve or jelly that is used as a sauce or syrup.
Compotes can actually be served warm or cold depending on what it being served with. For example, when served warm, compote is perfect on a stack of pancakes. However, when served cold, compote works great on top of ice cream 😉.
A good compote has both the perfect consistency and the perfect flavoring (or close to it..) . Keep in mind that these factors may also be subjective.
A good consistency for compote is one that is somewhat like a syrup that has a few pieces of fruit in it. As far as flavor goes, compote should have a good balance of tart and sweet.
Tips for making homemade compote.
Fresh blueberries are preferred for making a recipe such as this one. However, frozen blueberries will also work but, may result in a bit less flavor. Also, when selecting your frozen blueberries, make sure that the packaging only contains blueberries (ie no added sugar).
More helpful tips for you.
- When cooking you compote, your goal is to get a thickened sauce. If your compote gets 'mushy' that means it has been on the stove too long. You can try stirring in a few more berries to try balancing this out.
- This is one of those recipes that people have their own preferences on how they like it. Feel free to adjust the ingredients as needed (lemon juice or alternative) to get your desired flavor.
- You can make your blueberry compote even more flavorful by adding spices or vanilla extract. I like cinnamon or mint for example with blueberries (start small when adding these flavors).
How to store blueberry compote.
This blueberry compote sauce should be stored in an airtight container and refrigerator for about a week. You should know that this sauce may thicken as it cools but, you can reheat is and add a bit of water as needed.

- Blueberries. Fresh blueberries are preferred however, frozen (with no added sugar) blueberries can also work in this recipe.
- Sugar Alternative. Use a granular alternative that can also be heated. If you do not mind the tart flavor of the blueberries you can simply omit the alternative or even use honey (adjusting as needed) instead.
- Water. The water helps the berries break down in order to make a sauce.
- Lemon. Both juiced and zested. The lemon flavor helps to balance out the blueberries.
- Cornstarch blended with water to make a 'slurry'. This is used as a thickener as the sauce will be watery.
- Optional flavorings such as vanilla extract or seasonings.
