    What makes compote so good?

    ย
This easy to make compote is a versatile sauce, with a syrup-like texture, that can be used as a topping, an ingredient in baked goods, or even as a dip for other fruit or crackers.

I like that this blueberry compote can be made without having to add sugar to it!

Did you try my recipe for Strawberry Compote ?

That strawberry compote recipe is similar to this one as they are both compote recipes made with fresh fruit and no added sugar. However, that compote recipe is thickened with sugar free pectin. Both recipes are delicious and made with no added sugar.

This compote can be stored in glass jars which also are nice for sharing your homemade compote with others. You can find a selection of jars that may work for compote here.

What you need to make Blueberry Compote Sauce

    • Blueberries. Fresh blueberries are preferred however, frozen (with no added sugar) blueberries can also work in this recipe.
    • Sugar Alternative. Use a granular alternative that can also be heated. If you do not mind the tart flavor of the blueberries you can simply omit the alternative or even use honey (adjusting as needed) instead.
    • Water. The water helps the berries break down in order to make a sauce.
    • Lemon. Both juiced and zested. The lemon flavor helps to balance out the blueberries.
    • Cornstarch blended with water to make a 'slurry'. This is used as a thickener as the sauce will be watery.
    • Optional flavorings such as vanilla extract or seasonings.

    How to make Compote Sauce.

    1. In a medium saucepan on medium heat, combine together two cups of blueberries along with the sugar alternative, water, lemon zest and the lemon juice.
    2. Cook the ingredients, stirring occasionally, until the blueberries have broken down and the compote has thickened. It should take eight to 10 minutes for the the blueberries to break up and released their juices for thickening .
    3. Next, stir in the slurry (cornstarch and water mixture) and cook until thickened (about a minute or two), using a whisk to stir as needed.
    4. Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the remaining blueberries along with any additional flavoring (vanilla etc).

Sugar Free Blueberry Compote Sauce, a simple and delicious recipe made with fresh fruit and no added sugar. Perfect for desserts and brunch.

Tips for making the best blueberry compote.

Fresh blueberries are preferred for making a recipe such as this one. However, frozen blueberries will also work but, may result in a bit less flavor. Also, when selecting your frozen blueberries, make sure that the packaging only contains blueberries (ie no added sugar).

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. When cooking you compote, your goal is to get a thickened sauce. If your compote gets 'mushy' that means it has been on the stove too long. You can try stirring in a few more berries to try balancing this out.
    2. This is one of those recipes that people have their own preferences on how they like it. Feel free to adjust the ingredients as needed (lemon juice or alternative) to get your desired flavor.
    3. If you are unsure of how sweet your compote should be, add only half of the sugar alternative to the heating saucepan. Then you can add the remaining alternative as needed when you remove the mixture from the heat to add the remaining ingredients.
    4. You can make your blueberry compote even more flavorful by adding spices or vanilla extract. I like cinnamon or mint for example with blueberries (start small when adding these flavors).

    How to store blueberry compote.

This blueberry compote sauce should be stored in an airtight container and refrigerator for about a week. You should know that this sauce may thicken as it cools but, you can reheat is and add a bit of water as needed.
