This recipe is especially for anyone asking how do you make French toast from scratch.
To be honest, making French toast is somewhat easy.
However, making French toast that tastes and looks amazing, is another story.
Most French toast have the same three of four ingredients in them.
Those ingredients will include the bread, egg(s), and milk. In addition to these ingredients there will be some kind of flavoring such as sugar.
Here is the secret to good French toast.
Using the right ingredients and using those ingredients correctly is the biggest secret to making good French toast.
This means using the right kind of bread, fresh milk and eggs, and of course, flavorings.
You may be wondering what the right kind of bread is.
Since French toast really is all about the bread soaking up the liquid or dairy before cooking on a skillet or griddle, it makes sense that a thicker bread would be best. Also, allowing the bread to sit in the liquid for twenty minutes before cooking can make French toast even better (just be sure to cook it well since there are eggs in it).
Here are some tips for making French toast.
So I just mentioned that using thick bread (Challah, Brioche, etc.) allows for the absorption of the liquid dairy products. Also mentioned was that allowing the bread to sit in the liquid longer to absorb the liquid can lead to a better French toast.
Here are some more helpful tips.
- Some folks swear by using stale bread for French toast. This is because stale bread soaks up the liquid batter better than the fresh stuff. Plus, making French toast is a great way to use up that stale bread that may be sitting around in you kitchen.
- Adding topping is another way to make this French toast better. While I enjoy fruit or some sugar free syrup, you may be thinking about something else. You could try some sugar free icing or a glaze.
- Make this recipe low carb. Sub in a low carb bread as well as a low carb milk such as nut based milk.

The recipe for Sugar Free Churro French Toast
I mentioned above that using stale bread that is thick is a trick some folks use to making a 'better' French toast. Also, allowing the bread to soak up the liquid dairy (eggs and milk) is another secret to making a good French toast.
Also mentioned, this French toast is sweetened with a sugar free cinnamon churro seasoning.
There is a recipe above for making your own sugar free cinnamon churro seasoning.
You may want to double that recipe if you want extra cinnamon churro seasoning for later use (toast, popcorn, etc).
Ingredients needed to make
- Bread- 8 slices. Thick bread is recommended. Also, low carb folks can use low carb bread .
- Eggs- 3
- Milk- 2 cups. Low carb folks can use a low carb milk such as nut based milk.
- Brown Sugar Alternative - 3 tablespoons. Please us a Granular Brown Sugar alternative that measures 1:1 with brown sugar.
- Ground Cinnamon- 1 teaspoon.
- Vanilla Extract- 1 teaspoon.
How to make Sugar Free Churro French Toast
- Prepare the Churro seasoning as indicated above. Set this aside.
- Prepare the bread by allowing it sit out to get stale overnight if possible. If you are using bread from a loaf, slice it into thick slices. This step is optional but, an idea for making a better French toast. Place the bread slices in a large baking dish.
- In a mixing bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, brown sugar alternative, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Then pour half of it over the bread, flip the bread over, pour the remaining on top. If you cannot fit all of the bread into the baking dish use two baking dishes, another shallow dish or bowl, or soak the bread in batches. Allow the bread to soak for up to a half hour as the more of the liquid that is absorbed, the better the results (according to some..).
- When you are ready to make the French toast, prep a griddle or skillet for nonstick and preheat on medium high heat. Some folks use nonstick spray, butter, or a light oiling for this.
- Place the bread on the warm skillet, sprinkle some of the churro seasoning on each side, and cook well on both sides until the bread begins to turn brown. You may need to make the toast in batches if there is not enough room on your skillet or griddle.
- Sprinkle additional churro seasoning on the toast as needed for serving.
