What to know about baking with apples.
When looking for an apple to use in your baked recipes it is important to use apples that best for baking with. These baking apples are able to hold their shape when baked, provide a good balance of sweetness and tartness, and offer a good texture.
Here are popular baking apple varieties.
Granny Smith thanks to its firm texture, tart flavor, and ability to hold up well during cooking or baking.
Honeycrisp apples have a crisp texture and a good balance of sweetness and tartness.
Jonagold apples are a cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious varieties which is why they have a sweet-tart flavor.
Fuji apples have a sweet and crisp texture.
Pink Lady apples have a sweet-tart flavor and a firm texture.
Cortland apples have a slightly tart taste and a tender texture. They are excellent for baking and hold their shape well in pies and cakes.
Golden Delicious, while not as firm as some other varieties, Golden Delicious apples have a sweet and mellow flavor that adds a pleasant taste to baked goods.
• Choose the Right Apple Variety according to the level of tartness and sweetness you desire in your baked goods.
• Prepare Apples Properly, such as peeling, coring, and slicing the apples consistently to ensure even cooking.
• Prevent Browning as apples tend to oxidize and turn brown when exposed to air. To prevent browning, toss the apple slices with lemon juice or submerge them in water with lemon juice before using them in recipes.
• Adjust Sweetness as needed if your baked good is too tart.
• Enhance the flavor with warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves.
•Apples release moisture during baking, consider partially cooking the apples before adding them to the recipe or sprinkle them with a small amount of flour to absorb some of the moisture.
Here are some tips for making this apple crumble recipe.
For a recipe such as this one, an apple that is both tart and that can hold up to baking works best. Good choices include Granny Smith, Jonathan, or Pink Lady apples .
More helpful tips for you.
- Oats can be used to make the crumble topping on this dessert. While any kind of oat could work for a crumble topping, old fashioned rolled oats work best as they are larger and have a better texture.
- Flour, (such as all purpose flour, gluten free flour or a low carb flour) can alternatively be used to make the crumble instead of the oats. The flour that you select should measure like all purpose flour for best results.
- When you bake the crumble, bake it until the topping begins to brown and the apples appear to be tender. Then let the crumble sit at room temperature to set before serving.
How to store homemade apple crumble.
Once your apple crumble has fully cooled you can store it in an airtight container. If properly stored, it should keep refrigerated for up to five days or frozen for up to three months.

Ingredients needed to make recipe for apple crumble
- Apples. Your apples should be peeled, cored, and sliced in a uniform size of about ¼" thick. Granny Smith is a popular choice for this recipe. I like to use a couple of good variety baking apples for this recipe at a time.
- Ground Cinnamon and Nutmeg. The cinnamon used in both the filling and the topping.
- Lemon Juice. The apples are tossed in the apple juice to help them maintain their color. Some folks will sub in a bit of water with the lemon juice to make it less 'lemony'.
- Flour or Oats. Rolled oats work best in this recipe for texture. You are welcome to use the oat of your choice or substitute in flour (like gluten free flour or a low carb flour), making adjustments if needed.
- Butter. The butter should be melted. If you are using unsalted butter, add a quarter teaspoon of salt. Also, coconut oil can work in this recipe.
- Optional add-ins. Chopped nuts and/or a brown sugar alternative as needed for sweetness.
Expert Tip👉 You can drizzle honey, sugar free honey, maple syrup, or sugar free syrup over the baked crumble for added flavor.
How to make No Added Sugar Apple Crumble
- Preheat your oven to 350 and prep a baking dish for nonstick. You can also make this in individual ramekins, making adjustments in baking time. I would place the ramekins on a baking sheet as well.
- Place your apples in a large mixing bowl.
- In a small bowl, use a fork or small whisk to combine together the lemon juice with the cinnamon and nutmeg. Then pour the mixture over the apples and toss the apples so that the mixture is evenly dispersed. Transfer the ingredients to your prepared baking dish, spreading out the apples evenly.
- Next, to make the crumble add the remaining ingredients (flour/oats, melted butter, and remaining cinnamon) to a mixing bowl and mix well until the mixture becomes crumbly. Then sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples, covering them evenly.
- Bake the apple crumble in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples appear to be tender.
- Allow the apple crumble to cool slightly before serving.
Expert Tip👉 To store apple crumble in the freezer, first wrap it tightly in several layers of plastic wrap, aluminum foil or in a freezer-safe container. When you are ready to eat the leftover apple crumble, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator. Then you can reheat it in the oven at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes, or until it is heated through and the topping is golden brown.

Here is the original recipe.
- Sugar Alternative- ¼ cup equivalent to sugar granular.
- Ground Cinnamon with no added sugar- ½ teaspoon.
- Flour- 2 tablespoons.
- Apples- 3, peeled, cored, sliced. Most folks prefer using one kind of a tart apple such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith. However, I suggest using a combination of apples for a better taste.
Topping
- Flour (AP)- 1 ½ cups.
- Brown Sugar Alternative- ½ Cup Equivalent to sugar.
- Ground Cinnamon with no added sugar- 1 teaspoon.
- Butter- 1 stick cold and cut up into chunks.
How to make No Added Sugar Apple Crumble
- Preheat your oven to 350. Prep your baking dish for nonstick.
- Start by preparing your topping. Mix together the flour, brown sugar alternative and cinnamon in a bowl. Then cut or work in the butter chunks. When you get lumpy chunks, you can set this aside.
- The base. In a large bowl, mix together the sugar alternative, flour, and cinnamon. Then toss your apple slices in this bowl.
- Transfer the contents from the bowl to the prepped baking dish, spreading the mixture out evenly.
- Cover the apple mixture as evenly as possible with the topping from the first bowl.
- Bake this for 40-45 minutes. The topping should start to brown.

Your Apple Crumble would be good also with oatmeal added and less flour. I love your Blog. Thank you for sharing everything. Diana Klingenberg

I so agree about the oatmeal! Thanks 🙂
Marsha
I am confused. Does the topping have a brown sugar alternative or not?
Sugar Free Diva
Yes. It was originally omitted from the recipe card and has been updated. Thank you!
