What to know about baking with apples.

What are the best apples for baking?

When looking for an apple to use in your baked recipes it is important to use apples that best for baking with. These baking apples are able to hold their shape when baked, provide a good balance of sweetness and tartness, and offer a good texture.

Here are popular baking apple varieties.

Granny Smith thanks to its firm texture, tart flavor, and ability to hold up well during cooking or baking.
Honeycrisp apples have a crisp texture and a good balance of sweetness and tartness.
Jonagold apples are a cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious varieties which is why they have a sweet-tart flavor.
Fuji apples have a sweet and crisp texture.
Pink Lady apples have a sweet-tart flavor and a firm texture.
Cortland apples have a slightly tart taste and a tender texture. They are excellent for baking and hold their shape well in pies and cakes.
Golden Delicious, while not as firm as some other varieties, Golden Delicious apples have a sweet and mellow flavor that adds a pleasant taste to baked goods.

Expert tips for baking with apples.

    • Choose the Right Apple Variety according to the level of tartness and sweetness you desire in your baked goods.
    • Prepare Apples Properly, such as peeling, coring, and slicing the apples consistently to ensure even cooking.
    • Prevent Browning as apples tend to oxidize and turn brown when exposed to air. To prevent browning, toss the apple slices with lemon juice or submerge them in water with lemon juice before using them in recipes.
    • Adjust Sweetness as needed if your baked good is too tart.
    • Enhance the flavor with warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves.
•Apples release moisture during baking, consider partially cooking the apples before adding them to the recipe or sprinkle them with a small amount of flour to absorb some of the moisture.

Tips for making this crustless apple pie recipe .

My recipe calls for using both a sugar and a brown sugar alternative in order to get a more authentic apple plie flavor. You can however, use honey or maple syrup (making adjustments as needed).

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. The topping on this recipe is made with oats in order to get a chewy texture. You can try making this with flour or a flour alternative if desired.
    2. When I bake with apples, I usually like to use a variety of apples for better flavor. Use a variety of apples. This will give your pie a more complex flavor. I like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Golden Delicious for a baked dessert such as this one..
    3. When baking the pie, bake it until the apples are tender and the oat topping is golden brown and crisp. Overbaking this crustless pie can make the apples mushy and more like an applesauce.

How to store crustless apple pie with oats

Once the pie has fully cooled you can store it in an airtight container. If properly stored, it should keep for about three days refrigerated or frozen for up to a couple of months.

About recipe for crustless apple pie

This is a simple recipe for making an apple pie with everything but the crust and the sugar.
Crustless apple pie is made like regular apple pie with fresh apples and a delicious cinnamon oat topping.

How to serve crustless apple pie.

    • Serve this pie warm with a scoop of Sugar Free Vanilla Ice Cream on top.
    • Make this in individual ramekins with Sugar Free Whipped Cream.
    • Make this part of your breakfast by serving it with pancakes and waffles.

Ingredients needed to make No Added Sugar Crustless Apple Pie

    • Apples. Your apples should be peeled, cored and sliced. It is easiest to core then slice in half. Then cut the slices in half again and slice the pieces about ½" thick.
    • Sugar Alternatives. My recipe uses brown sugar alternative and white sugar alternative. When selecting a sugar alternative, select ones that can be baked with. Feel free to use only brown or only white granular sugar alternative as well.
    • Spices. The spices used in my crustless pie include Ground Cinnamon and Nutmeg.
    • Butter. This adds that richness to the pie that you would expect. You butter should be melted and it will be divided.
    • Oats. Rolled or Old Fashioned Oats work best in this recipe.

Expert Tip 👉 You may need to adjust the sweetness of this recipe depending on the sweetness of the apples used and your personal preferences.

How to make No Added Sugar Crustless Apple Pie

    • Start by preheating your oven to 350 and prepping your 9" pie pan/plate/dish for nonstick. Greasing works best for me.
    • Arrange your apple slices in the prepped pie dish so that they are able to both bake and brown as evenly as possible. My apples were arranged in a circular path.
    • In a medium mixing bowl, use a whisk to combine together the sugar alternatives along with the cinnamon and nutmeg. Then, pour half of the melted butter into the mixing bowl and whisk until combined. Evenly distribute this over the apples in the pie dish.
    • Next, in another bowl, combine together the remaining butter with the oats to make the topping. You can add additional spices or sugar alternative as desired. Sprinkle this over the apples in the pie dish.
    • Bake until apples are tender and topping is golden brown (about 45-50 minutes).
    • You can serve this warm or cold or in my case, both! 🙂
