Oatmeal raisin cookies made without sugar.

This is a no added sugar recipe that is based upon the classic oatmeal raisin cookie recipe.

I like that is a cookie that can be enjoyed any time of the day, including breakfast!

Did you try my recipe for Sugar Free No Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Oatmeal Bars?

That peanut butter bar recipe is a simple layered dessert or snack recipe made with a chocolate ganache topping. Both this oatmeal raisin cookie recipe and that layered peanut butter bar recipe are delicious dessert recipe that feature oatmeal .

You can make this cookie recipe gluten free. Use gluten free rolled oats and gluten free all purpose flour.

What does oatmeal do to cookies?

Why should you use oatmeal in baking?

Oatmeal is often added for both nutritional benefits and for texture in what it is added to.

Experts tell us that oatmeal can help with blood pressure and with blood sugar. It can also help make you feel full as it takes a bit of time to digest.

When it comes to cookies, oatmeal adds a great taste to a cookie such as this one. Also, oatmeal also helps to retain the moisture in this cookie while baking, resulting in a chewy and moist cookie.

Tips for making oatmeal raisin cookies.

Using rolled or old fashioned oats is recommended in this recipe. This is because these oats offer the best texture while holding these cookies together.

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. While this is optional, soaking the raisins will make them more moist and plump. To soak them simply place them in a cup of hot water for about 20 minutes before draining the water and adding them to this recipe.
    2. Chilling the dough before baking will help the cookies keep their shape while baking. You can also slightly flatten the cookies with the palm of your hand, before baking, to flatten them out as needed.
    3. The butter should be softened to room temperature for better blending. You can also try subbing in peanut butter or another nut butter for part of the butter for more flavor.
    4. Lastly, add a bit of crunch to your cookies with chopped nuts. Or, you can add shredded coconut for a flavor twist.

How to store chewy oatmeal raisin cookies.

Once these cookies have fully cooled, these cookies should be stored in an airtight container. Adding a slice of bread can help keep them soft. If properly stored, these cookies should keep for about a week at room temperature or up to a few months when frozen (without the bread).

How to you make oatmeal raisin cookies?

This recipe is based upon a classic recipe for oatmeal raisin cookies.
To make these cookies we will first combine together the dry ingredients (except for the oats) and the wet ingredients separately before mixing the ingredients together and baking the cookies.

How do your serve raisin and oatmeal cookies?

    • Serve these cookies as is with a glass of milk or cup of tea on the side.
    • Combine two cookies together with Sugar Free Vanilla Ice Cream in the center to make a tasty cookie sandwich.
    • Top these cookies with Homemade Sugar Free Peanut Butter and enjoy thse cookies for breakfast or as a snack.

Ingredients needed to make oatmeal raisin cookies without added sugar.

    • Flour. If you are using an alternative flour, such as gluten free flour, use a flour that measured 1:1 with regular all purpose flour for best results.
    • Baking Soda. Added for leavening.
    • Cinnamon. Ground cinnamon gives these cookies a nice accent.
    • Butter. Your butter should be softened to room temperature. If you are using unsalted butter, add a half teaspoon of salt to your flour.
    • Brown Sugar Alternative and White Sugar alternative. For best results, use sugar alternatives that measure 1:1 with regular granular sugar alternative and that can also be baked with.
    • Eggs. Your eggs should be at room temperature.
    • Vanilla Extract. Added as a flavor balance.
    • Old Fashioned or Rolled Oats. While you could use quick oats in this recipe, for the best results with texture, I would use the old fashioned or rolled oats.
    • Raisins. Use fresh and plump raisins.

    ย
Expert Tip ๐Ÿ‘‰ Can you substitute honey or maple syrup for the sugar alternatives used in this recipe? Yes. However you will need to use less of these sweet ingredients and make adjustments as needed in the baking time. I would also make adjustments as needed with the amount of added oats for texture.

How to make No sugar added oatmeal and raisin cookies.

    • Preheat your oven to 350 and prepare your baking sheet(s) for nonstick. I like parchment paper or a baking mat for this recipe.
    • In a medium bowl, use a whisk to mix together the flour, baking soda, and ground cinnamon. Set this bowl aside.
    • Next, in a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter with the sugar alternatives until creamy. Then mix in the eggs and the vanilla extract.
    • Add the dry ingredients from the first bowl to the large mixing bowl and mix until just combined. Then stir in the oats and the raisins.
    • Use a spoon or cookie scoop to scoop the cookie dough and then place the cookies on to the prepared baking sheets about 1 1/1 to two inches apart. You can use the palm of your hands to slightly flatten the cookies if needed.
    • Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes or until the edges begin to brown. Then remove the baking sheets from your oven and let the cookies sit for about five minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack to fully cool.

Expert Tip ๐Ÿ‘‰ These cookies will be slightly soft in the center when your taking them from the oven. They should however, be fully set on the baking sheet before they are removed to finish cooling.

Oh-my-gosh--these cookies are soo good! I just pulled the first pan out of the oven and I'm tempted to break some of them up into a bowl of milk.. The only change I made was using Earth Balance Spread instead of butter for my husband's dietetic restrictions and flattened the cookie scoops a bit with the back of a spoon.

We enjoy your emails and are happy to have found your site for such good recipes; we are able to enjoy treats again.

      Thank you so much.
