Recently, someone asked me what are the benefits of apples.
I always think of apples as that delicious fruit that is so convenient.
What I mean is, all you need to do is rinse your apple and pack it to go so that it is there for you when you are looking for a snack.
But, we all know that there there are indeed other benefits associated with eating apples.
For an easy snack that is just under a hundred calories (average apple), this fat free treat can certainly satisfy a craving. But, apples also are a decent source of fiber and vitamin C.

I like a fresh and crisp apple that reminds me of eating those other kinds of nachos.
Also, an apple that will offer a nice balance to the sweetness of the caramel that goes on top.
I like a Granny Smith, McIntosh, or maybe even a Jonathan apple for this nacho recipe.
Here are some tips for choosing the right apple.
I just mentioned that using a less sweet apple, such as a Granny Smith, works best is this recipe because of the sweetness of the caramel sauce. Also, a firm apple will hold the toppings better as well as give that great crunch that is expected from most any kind of nacho.
Here are some more helpful tips for you.
- While I have a great recipe for homemade sugar free caramel sauce, there are other options out there. You can find Sugar Free Caramel Sauce online. I prefer making my own sauce so that I know exactly what is in it including sugar alternatives used.
- Use more than one kind of apple for color and flavor. I like the green color of a Granny Smith however, adding a few slices of Ida Red or even an Empire apple can make the presentation of the nachos more colorful.
- Think of the caramel sauce as the 'cheese' in this kind of nacho. Adding other kinds of toppings can be like the hot peppers, lettuce, or other goodies that you would expect from regular nachos. Topping ideas include sugar free chocolate chips, sugar free marshmallows, cinnamon or apple pie spice, chopped nuts, oats, granola, pretzels, sugar free candy, berries, or even cereal
How to prepare apples for this recipe.
I always start by washing my apples and cutting out any imperfections as needed. Then core the apples and cut them into quarter inch slices.
