Sugar Free Greek Yogurt is a nice alternative to the usual buttercream frosting.
I like that this frosting is low in fat too!
Sugar Free Greek Yogurt Frosting
This is surprisingly a simple recipe for frosting to make.
I think that the Greek Yogurt gives this frosting an unexpected tang that you do not get from other frosting recipes.
I know that folks are pretty happy with my Sugar Free Buttercream Frosting recipe.
That recipe is a traditional, yet sugar free, buttercream frosting recipe that has butter in it.
While there is something to be said about the butter giving structure to frosting, this recipe is a lower fat version of a frosting.
To make this recipe you will need sugar free powdered sugar. You can find a selection of sugar free powdered sugar here.
This recipe is for anyone asking what can I use instead of sugar for frosting.
I am the first person to notice when something has too much sugar in it.
When you combine the fat that comes in many frosting recipes with the sugar also added, that tasty dessert can become bad news.
This frosting recipe is not sweetened with sugar.
Instead of the sugar, we are using a sugar free alternative.
You are welcome to use the sugar free powdered sugar of your choice.
This frosting is a good substitute for anyone asking what is a substitute for cream cheese frosting.
I would agree that there are times when a cream cheese frosting would work better than others.
Pretty much any baked goods with carrots would fall into the cream cheese frosting category (my opinion).
However, for a basic cake or cupcake recipe, this frosting should work for you.
If you find that this recipe is too thin for your needs, you can add additional sugar free powdered sugar (slowly stirring it in) until you reach your desired consistency. Another options is to refrigerate the frosting before actually using it as this should thicken it up as well.
Tips for making frosting made with Greek yogurt.
Since this recipe does not call for butter or a similar kind of fat, it can be a bit thinner than other frosting recipes. You can thicken up your frosting by adding additional sugar free powdered sugar or a fat like butter or cream cheese.
More helpful tips for you.
- Straining the yogurt is suggested as this will take out much of the liquid that you probably do not want in a frosting.
- To strain your yogurt you will need a yogurt strainer (which you can find online). Set the strainer over a bowl (use a deep bowl) covered with plastic wrap, and allow it to drain while refrigerated overnight.
- This recipe calls for vanilla extract. However, you could add some flavor to this by using another flavor of extract. Banana extract or maple extract may be an option for you to use.
- Add some color to your frosting. Simply add a few drops of food coloring to do so.
- Using an electric mixer on a high speed is a good way to give this frosting a fluffy density as it will add air. Be sure to spread the frosting soon after mixing it.
How to store most anything with Greek Yogurt frosting.
Refrigerate this frosting and anything that it is used with is encouraged. For best results, after frosting your cakes or cupcakes with this yogurt frosting, refrigerate them in a covered container such as a cake container or cupcake container.

About this recipe for Sugar Free Frosting
This is an alternative frosting recipe that is made with Greek Yogurt rather than the usual butter or cream cheese. The result may be a thinner frosting which is why I suggest that you drain the yogurt first. Other options include refrigerating the frosting, adding additional powdered sugar, or adding some kind of fat.
To keep this recipe as low in sugar as possible, I suggest that you use ingredients that are also.
Look for a Greek Yogurt that has no added sugar.
While it may make the frosting a bit 'tart', you can balance this out with the sugar alternative and extract.
The ingredients needed to make Sugar Free Greek Yogurt Frosting
- Strained Greek Yogurt- 2 Cups. I use nonfat plain yogurt (please make sure that your yogurt does not have added sugar in it!). You can strain the yogurt by using a yogurt strainer (which you can find online). Set the strainer over a bowl (use a deep bowl) covered with plastic wrap, and allow it to drain while refrigerated overnight.
- Sugar Free Powdered Sugar- 1 cup. You can make your own sugar free powdered sugar using this recipe or you can buy sugar free powdered sugar already made online.
- Vanilla Extract-1 teaspoon. However, you could add some flavor to this by using another flavor of extract. Banana extract or maple extract may be an option for you to use.
- Optional-Milk- optional for thinning if needed. 1 tsp at a time.
- Optional- Cream Cheese- 1 (8 ounce) package or as needed , softened to room temperature. Cream cheese can be used to thicken or add structure to your frosting.
How to make Sugar Free Greek Yogurt Frosting
- If not already strained, strain your yogurt. Simply place a strainer in a bowl or cup. Line the strainer with cheesecloth, a coffee filter, or sturdy paper towel. Fill the lined strainer with your yogurt and cover. Allow this to drain overnight. For best results, strain the yogurt. However, you can simply use an 8 ounce flavored yogurt and omit the vanilla extract (it's a cheat).
- Using an electric mixer and a large mixing bowl, blend together the yogurt, sugar free powdered sugar and the vanilla extract. Start on a low speed and work your way up to a high speed when the ingredients begin to blend. Beat until smooth.
- If your frosting seems too thin you can add milk to the mixing bowl a teaspoon at a time until your reach your consistency. However, if your frosting is too thin for your needs you can add additional sugar free powdered sugar or cream cheese as needed.
- Refrigerate this frosting and anything that it is used with. For best results, after frosting your cakes or cupcakes with this yogurt frosting, refrigerate them in a covered container such as a cake container or cupcake container.
