Frequently asked questions about puff pastry.
Puff pastry is a special kind of dough that is made by layering it with a fat such as butter. The result is a 'flaky' dough.
There are actually several kinds of puff pastry depending on the ratio of fat to flour. The 'laminating' of of layers of dough and butter is what gives puff pastry its unique texture and flavor.
Puff pastry is a popular dough used by both professional and novice bakers alike.
This is because of the many tasty creations that can be made with puff pastry dough.
Puff pastry dough can be used to make appetizers, rolls, and many kinds of desserts including pies and tarts. Perhaps the best reason to use puff pastry is that it can be easily purchase for use at home.
Tips for making puff pastry rolls.
If your pastry is frozen, it is a good idea to allow it to thaw to room temperature first (about a half hour). This is because frozen puff pastry tends to crack.
More helpful tips for you.
- Before you unroll the pastry sheet, prep your work surface with a small amount of dusted flour. This will help keep the pastry from sticking to the surface when you roll it up. I actually like to use parchment paper as my work surface as it makes transferring and clean up so much easier to do!
- When rolling up your puff pastry, try to do this as tightly as possible for a better and more uniform shape. You can do this by rolling the pastry slowly and making sure that the ends and center are all rolled evenly.
- Prepare this recipe in advance and bake it later. Simply roll the pastry as directed into a log and cover with plastic kitchen wrap before freezing. Then, when you are ready to bake it, thaw the log overnight in your refrigerator before slicing it and baking as directed.
How to store puff pastry cinnamon rolls.
These tasty cinnamon rolls are really best when served warm (you will 'smell' why..),
Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container and then refrigerated for about four to five days.

- Prepare your pastry by allowing to get to room temperature before using it in this recipe. Also, prepare your workspace by lightly dusting it with flour and also a baking sheet (parchment paper works great in this recipe!).
- In a small bowl, use a whisk to combine together the sugar alternative and the cinnamon. If you are using the butter, make sure that is melted as well.
- Preheat your oven to 350. Also, carefully unroll the puff pastry on to your workspace.
- Use a pastry brush to lightly brush the melted butter over the puff pastry. You can use about half of the butter as you can brush the remaining onto the pastry before baking it if you want to.

- Starting at the side that is closest to you, carefully roll the pastry back up into a log as tightly as possible.
- Use a serrated or bread knife to slice the log into 14 equal pieces about ½- ¾" wide. If you are having trouble slicing, cover the log with plastic wrap and freeze for about twenty minutes and try slicing again.
- Place the sliced pastry onto the prepared baking sheet about two inches apart as they will spread. You can brush the remaining melted butter over the pastry as well.
- Bake for 20-22 minutes or until the begin to brown.
- Transfer the cinnamon swirls to a wire cooling rack to finish cooling. You can add optional toppings before serving.
Expert Tip 👉 When brushing the melted butter on to the rolled out pastry, brush the butter to about a half inch of the edges of the pastry so that it stays intact while rolling.
