Ingredients needed to make a skillet brownie without sugar.
- Flour. All purpose flour was used to make my brownies. Alternative flours should measure like all purpose flour and be able to be baked with.
- Dutch Process Cocoa. This unsweetened cocoa powder gives these brownies a more robust chocolate flavor.
- Butter. Your butter should be melted. If you are using unsalted butter, you can add a half teaspoon of salt to the flour.
- Brown Sugar Alternative. Select a brown sugar alternative that measures like brown sugar and that can also be baked with.
- Eggs. Use large eggs that are at room temperature.
- Vanilla Extract. Using 'pure' vanilla extract can enhance the flavor of this brownie.
- Sugar Free Chocolate Chips. Semi-sweet chocolate chips Makes these brownies rich and gooey in the center.

Tips for making the best chocolate skillet brownie.
Using a cast iron skillet is really the best way to make this brownie in a skillet. Not only is it an oven-safe skillet (you can double check to make sure that your is), it is a heavy skillet which is what makes the brownie crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.
More helpful tips for you.
- You can add extra goodness to your brownie with chopped walnuts, white chocolate baking chips, or a teaspoon or two of espresso powder for additional flavor.
- I like to prep my skillet well for nonstick for a recipe such as this one. Doing so makes it so much easier to clean up when you are done.
- Do you have to use dutch process cocoa? Regular unsweetened cocoa powder can be used however, your brownie will taste more chocolaty and may be a bit less dense.
- This dessert is really best when served warm so that is it warm and full of gooey chocolate on the inside.
- Avoid over-baking your brownie as they can become dry on the inside.
- What do you serve this chocolate goodness with? Something dairy based such as ice cream, whipped cream, or a glass of milk.
