You may be wondering, what is the difference between chocolate and German chocolate.
The origins of the chocolate that originally went into German Chocolate cake was from an actual baking chocolate called German Chocolate. That baking chocolate has a more subtle chocolate flavor but, is also sweetened.
Since 'German Chocolate' for baking is not always common or easy to find, folks have found alternatives to use to get that sweet yet, chocolaty taste.
It is common for German Chocolate cake to be made with unsweetened cocoa powder along with sweetener and fat instead or German Chocolate. Some German chocolate cakes may even be made with chocolate cake mix or devils food cake mix.

Here are some tips for making German chocolate cookies.
I just mentioned that this recipe is an adaptation of a German Chocolate Cookie recipe that that contains sugar. You can make the basic cookie and then top it with sugar free German chocolate frosting or you can simply stir in a few extra ingredients.
Here are some helpful tips.
- This recipe call for alternatives to sugar. Please use granular sugar alternatives that measure 1:1 with sugar for best results. Not doing so may throw off your ingredient balance.
- Using fresh ingredients in this recipe is important. This is especially true when it comes to your dry ingredients such as the baking soda.
- Make these cookies into cookie bars instead. Simply press the cookie dough into a well-prepared baking pan and bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean!
How to store German Chocolate Cookies.
Because of the frosting that we are adding to these cookies, I suggest refrigerating or freezing these cookies. Simply store the cookie in a single layer if possible (you can try using wax or parchment paper for layers) and place in an air tight container for storing.

How to make Sugar Free German Chocolate Cookies
- Preheat your oven to 375 and prep two cookie or baking sheets with parchment paper or use baking mats for nonstick.
- In a medium mixing bowl, use a whisk or a fork to mix together the flour, baking soda, salt and unsweetened cocoa powder until just blended. Set this bowl aside.
- Next, in a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter with the brown sugar alternative and the white sugar alternative. Then mix in the eggs and vanilla extract until just combined.
- For the next step, we will add the dry ingredients from the first bowl to the mixing bowl. Mix this slowly until just blended, avoiding over mixing. I like to add half of the dry ingredients, give a gentle stir, and then add the remaining to make sure that the dry ingredients are evenly distributed.
- If you will not be adding the frosting to these cookies, you can fold in the sugar free chocolate chips, coconut, and pecans.
- Using a small cookie scoop, scoop 12 cookies per baking rack leaving space between as these
cookies will spread while baking. Bake for 10-12 minutes then allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for five minutes before transferring to a cooling rack. Allow the cookies to fully cool before topping with the German Chocolate Frosting.
