Frequently asked questions about ombre cakes.
An ombre cake is a layered cake with variations of colors.
The cake is assembled in a 'gradient' according to the colors of the layers.
Sometimes an ombre cake can be ombre in frosting rather than in layers.
As long as there is a gradient of color, the cake can be described as 'ombre'.
A crumb coat is like a base layer of frosting that is applied to a cake before a final layer of frosting is applied . The purpose of the crumb layer is to prevent crumbs from releasing from the cake on getting into the final layer of frosting.
After the crumb coat is applied, the cake should be refrigerated so that it can set.
A crumb coat can make your cake look more professional as well as help to hold they layers together.

About this sugar free cake recipe.
This is a four layered cake recipe made with no added sugar.
Each of the layers has food coloring added to make for an ombre look.
Here is how you can serve this cake.
- With added berries on top (like with my cake).
- Along with a cup of coffee or milk on the side.
- Topped with a dollop (or two 😉) of whipped topping.
Ingredients needed to make Sugar Free Ombre Layered Cake
- Flour. All purpose flour was used to make my cake.
- Baking Powder. Added for leavening.
- Salt. You can omit the salt if you are using salted butter.
- Butter. Your butter should be softened to room temperature.
- Oil. You should use a neutral oil such as vegetable oil.
- Granulated Sugar Alternative. However, it is important that you use a sugar alternative that measures like sugar and that can also be baked with as well.
- Eggs. Your eggs should be at room temperature.
- Vanilla Extract. This is added to your cake for flavor.
- Milk. However, I suggest that you use whole milk as the milk has an effect on the moisture in this cake.
- Food coloring. A gel food coloring works best with cakes. Use the color of your choice.
Expert Tip 👉 My cake was made with various amounts of food coloring in each layer. However, you can alternatively use a different color for each of the layers in your cake.
Ingredients needed to make Berry Buttercream Frosting

- Berries and garnishes of your choice.

How to make Sugar Free Ombre Layered Cake
- Preheat your oven to 325 and double prep four cake pans for nonstick.
- In a medium mixing bowl, use a whisk to combine together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Next, in a large mixing bowl, beat together the the butter, oil, and sugar alternative until smooth. Then you can add the eggs and vanilla extract and mix your batter until completely combined. However, do not over mix.
- Gently stir in half of the dry mixture from the first bowl to the large mixing bowl. Then add half of the milk. You can now repeat this step again with the remaining ingredients. Also, make sure that you mix your cake batter until it is just combined.
- Divide the batter as evenly as possible into four different bowls. In the first bowl add two to four drops of the food coloring. Then add the food coloring in increasing amounts in each of the remaining bowls, so they are incrementally more saturated with color.
- Next, transfer each of the bowls of batter into its own prepped cake pan.
- Bake the cake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
