Frequently asked questions about brownies.
Sugar is an essential ingredient in many recipes as it not only sweetens the recipes, it helps to the moisture in what is being baked. However, sugar also has calories, carbohydrates, and can create problems for some folks.
This recipe uses a granular sugar alternative that measures like sugar and that can be baked with. Adjustments have been made to this recipe to help compensate for what the alternatives cannot offer to a recipe that sugar can offer.
Making good brownies can depend on the ingredients that are used, the method used to make the brownies, and how the brownies are baked.
The ingredients should be fresh and in good proportions. Combining the ingredients properly and not overbaking the brownies is also important to making good brownies.
Tips for making sugar free brownies.
Use a granular sugar alternative that measures 1:1 with sugar. That alternative should also be able to be baked with.
More helpful tips.
- Use unsweetened cocoa powder rather than hot chocolate. While you could try Dutch process, I like the regular unsweetened in a recipe such as this one.
- When selecting a peanut butter to use in this recipe, I would suggest that you do not use an organic one. Because of the separation of oil from the other ingredients, it is hard to get a good result in a recipe such as this one.
- For a fudgier brownie, cut your baking time to 30 minutes. Another option is to use oil rather than the butter.
How to store leftover brownies.
These brownies should be stored in an airtight container.
If properly stored, these brownies should keep up to a few days at room temperature or frozen up to a few months.

How to make Sugar Free Peanut Butter Chocolate Brownies
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes
Cooling time: 1 hour
Total time: 1 hour 45 minutes
- Preheat your oven to 325. Prep a metal square baking pan (8X8 or 9X9) for nonstick. I like to give the pan a light spray of nonstick, place a piece of parchment paper over it, and then spray the parchment paper lightly.
- Use a whisk or sift together the flour and the unsweetened cocoa powder in a medium bowl.
- In a microwave safe bowl, melt the butter and chocolate chips, stopping to stir every 20 seconds. Alternatively, the butter can be melted over low heat on the stove. Once the butter is melted on the stove, stir in the chocolate chips until melted .
- Next, in a large bowl, stir together the sugar alternative, eggs, and vanilla extract until almost combined. Add the melted chocolate and butter mixture to the bowl and give the mixture a few stirs. Then gently fold in the flour and unsweetened cocoa powder until just combined.
- Evenly spread the brownie mixture in the prepare baking pan then add the peanut butter on top using a spoon to 'dollop' it on. You can use a butter knife or rubber spatula to disperse this or use a skewer or straw to make swirls.
- Bake the brownies for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow the brownie to cool before cutting them.
Expert Tip ๐ Using parchment paper that overhangs the pan can make for both an easier clean up and also a means for lifting the cooled brownies from the pan for cutting. ๐
