About this recipe for berry crumble bars.

This is both a crumbly and crisp bar made with fresh fruit.

Also, this is a simple recipe that is made with a almond flour crust.

Did you try my No Added Sugar Apple Crumble ?

That is a similar crumble recipe made with fruit. Like with this recipe, that apple crumber has no added sugar in it.

To make this recipe you will need both almond flour and almond meal. You can find almond flour and almond meal here.

What is the difference between cobbler and crumble?

Honestly, I hear people using the terms interchangeable as if they are the same thing. However, as similar as cobblers and crumbles may be, they are also different.
Both cobblers and crumbles are baked fruit on a crust. However, while a cobbler will have a top layer similar to a pie, the crumble with have a top layer made of sweetened crumbs and butter.

What fruit is good for a crumble?

Berries are commonly used for a crumble dessert such as this one.
Most any kind of berry will work.

Crumble desserts are most popular when fresh berries are in season.
When there is an abundance of fresh berries, such as blueberries and raspberries, people (like me) look for tasty ways to use those berries up in a recipe such as this one. ๐Ÿ˜‹

Here are some tips for making crumble.

While my crumble is made with raspberries and blueberries, you can use the fruit(s) of your choice. I like blackberries or strawberries for a recipe such as this one too.

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. Almond meal is used for the topping. You can also add sliced almonds for an additional crunch.
    2. I have used fresh fruit in my bars. You can also use frozen fruit if you do not have the fresh kind. Just make sure that there is no added sugar in the packaging.
    3. You will know when these bars are done baking when the crumble begins to brown. There may also be a bit of bubbling in the center.

    How to store fruit crumble.

Leftover crumble bars should be stored in an airtight container. If properly stored and refrigerated, these bars should keep for up to a week.

How to make Sugar Free Keto Berry Crumble Bars

    Yields 9 servings.
Prep Time active time 45 minutes | waiting time 2 hours | baking time 25 minutes, divided

There are three layers and thus, three steps to making this crumble bar recipe.

We will first bake the crust. Then we will cook the filling ingredients. Lastly, we will layer the filling over the crust and top that with the crumble topping before baking.

    Make a keto crumble crust.

    1. Start by preheating your oven to 350f. Also, line an 8 inch square baking pan with parchment paper that overhangs.
    2. Next, combine the ingredients to make the crust. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the almond flour, lemon zest, granulated erythritol and melted butter.
    3. When the ingredients start to stick together you can transfer them to the prepare baking pan.
    4. Press the crust ingredients firmly into the pan until the entire bottom of the pan is covered with crust ingredients.
    5. Bake the crust until it begins to brown (about eight minutes). Then remove the crust from the oven and allow it to cool so that you can add the remaining layers.
    6. You can keep the oven on as you will need to place the prepared crumble into the oven to bake.

    How to make crumble filling.

    • Start by activating the chia sees. Simply place the seeds in a bowl or cup with a half cup of water. It will take about a half hour to form the desired gelatinous paste for the filling. You can do this while the crust is baking to save time.
    • To make the filling, place the thickened chia paste along with the remaining filling ingredients into a good processor or good blender. Then pulse this as needed to combine the ingredients.
    • Next, in a saucepan over medium heat, transfer the ingredients from the blender or processor. Do not stir the ingredients as we are trying to remove the water and thicken the ingredients into a jam-like filling. This should take about three to five minutes total.
    • Remove the filling from the heat and allow it to cool for five minutes. It will thicken more as it cools.
    • Once the filling has cooled you can transfer it to the pan and evenly spread it over the crust.

Expert TIP๐Ÿ‘‰ When cooking the filling ingredients on the stove. we need the excess liquid to evaporate. Minimal stirring is suggested however, but it should be done if needed to make sure the ingredients do no burn.

Also, ๐Ÿ‘‰The jam-like filling will develop its thickest consistency when cold. Let it cool while you make the crumble.

How to make low carbohydrate crumble topping.

    • In a medium bowl, combine together the almond meal, granulated erythritol, shredded coconut and lemon zest.
    • Once the ingredients have been combined you can work in the cubes of butter.
    • When the ingredients resemble a crumble topping, you can evenly distribute it over the filling that you placed over the crust in your pan.
    • You can now bake the bars at 350F for 12- 15 minutes or until the crumble turns golden.
    • Allow for the crumble to fully cool before serving as it will need to set. Refrigerating the crumble can help speed this up.
