I like that this can actually be made without adding a bunch of sugar to it as well.
Sugar Free Boston Cream Pie Cake
I am not really sure how Boston Cream Pie got it's name.
Perhaps it got it's name from because it is a rendition of an actual pie that is famous in the city of Boston.
What we all do know about this popular cake is that it is well loved.
It could be because of the cream filling. Or, the popularity can be because of the chocolate covering that is on top of it.
The truth is that while there are layers, a filling and a topping, this is actually an easy cake to make.
To make this cake you will need yellow cake mix. You can make your own sugar free yellow cake mix using this recipe or you can purchase yellow cake mix online. You will also need sugar free vanilla pudding (find it online here) , sugar free powdered sugar (make your own) or buy it here.

How to make Sugar Free Boston Cream Pie Cake
When I make this cake/pie, I like to think of it as being in three parts. The cake, the filling, and the topping.
- Start by making the yellow cake mix as per the direction on the box or in the recipe. Use two (8-9") round cake pans.
- While the cake is baking, whip together the milk (or substitute of choice) and instant pudding mix. Whip this until somewhat fluffy- about 2-3 minutes total. Then allow this to sit for a few minutes for some of the air to escape. Cover and refrigerate.
- For the glaze, either use the recipe Chocolate Glaze Using this recipe or in a microwave safe cup, melt together the butter and chocolate chips and then stir in the remaining ingredients (powdered sugar, vanilla extract and hot water) until blended.
- When the yellow cake has cooled and you are ready to assemble this cake. Tip-I find this easiest to work with and clean up by working on parchment paper. I place the bottom cake layer on the parchment paper and layer the remaining steps over this.
- Simple top on of the yellow cake layers with the pudding filling that you have refrigerated.
- Place the other yellow cake layer over this filling.
- Slowly pour the chocolate glaze topping over the cake.
